REACH Senior Cafe engages seniors who patronise their cafe through activities like arts and crafts and board games. To ensure that we create programmes that aligns with their interest, we conducted a survey with the seniors. From the findings, we realised the seniors are interested in crafts and hence, our group intend to focus on coming up with progressive craft activities that can be held for numerous sessions after visiting other senior activity centres since it is more sustainable. To facilitate in our idea generation process, we not only did our desktop research but also participated in festivals to observe their craft activities.

Summer Breeze and Festive Sparkle is an event organised at Urban Park, Tanjong Pagar Centre to celebrate the year end holidays. With its transformation to a paradise beach destination, colourful beach huts were also set up to add a tropical zing to an Instagram photo. Besides craft workshops being made available for young children, fresh

beverages and light bites are also sold at the Tiki Fruit Bar by Farm ‘N’ Pantry.

Santa’s Workshop at The South Pole is a one-stop Christmas Party filled with fun-filled arts and craft, food and music to celebrate Christmas! Some of their daily highlights include evening movie screening, LED balloon giveaways, longest communal dining experience, art market, and face paintings.

Let’s Go Jalan Jalan is a food and music festival featuring familiar home taste and live entertainment. Over 200 varieties of food and merchandise stalls including layered drinks and personalised handmade craft items are featured.

Our takeaways from the three festivals

Despite the lack of entertainments in Summer Breeze and Festive Sparkle, we managed to identify numerous multi-purpose decorations that were placed around the venue to encourage passerby to snap a picture for memories. At the same time, the event was also holding an Instagram contest where shoppers can stand a chance to win shopping vouchers. With this in mind, it has inspired us to create a photo booth where existing REACH youths can capture their cafe moments.

After visiting Summer Breeze and Festive Sparkle, we wanted to experience and explore an event that could provide us with more insights on table layouts we could possibly adopt in REACH Youth Cafe. The Santa’s Workshop was held at The South Pole, with organisers and booth tenders conducting their activities at different levels of the mall. In Basement 1, there is a long stretch of table where craft workshops are conducted during selected timings. Otherwise, shoppers can expect to experience a communal dining experience during peak hours. At the same time, shoppers can find handicraft items at the ground level where young entrepreneurs showcased craft items and conducted hands-on sessions. Through this visit, we realised that the importance of table and chairs placement as well as signages that encourage people to join in.

From the Let’s Go Jalan Jalan Festival, we were able to explore the drinks menu and samples on the various types of layered drinks that are currently trending in the market. This played a huge role in helping us to formulate our ideas for the the “DIY Corner” in REACH Youth Cafe where youths get to create their own layered drinks.

Hence, we made use of what we have observed and learnt at The South Pole and Let’s Go Jalan Jalan Festival to try out the different layered drinks we have in mind and to ensure that our DIY Corner provides step by step instructions or have sufficient personnel to assist youths that are interested in making their own beverages.
