“Beautiful People” is a project under Beyond Social Services that aims to see and bring out the best in youth at risks through a mentorship programme (Ng, 2016). Till date, the project is effective in impacting the disadvantaged youths positively and have enabled them to possess a positive outlook in life.
Ng (2016) found that the mentors have a prominent role in contributing to this success through three ways:
First, they are supportive in terms of guiding them towards making good decisions instead of forcing them to do things they are not interested in.
Second, they are encouraging. Despite their mentees’ flaws, the mentors refrain from any judgemental behaviours and encouraged their mentees to do the same. This allowed their mentees to learn to look from a different perspective when faced with a challenge and to persevere all the way.
Third, they are dedicated. The support and encouragement from the mentors do not just halt after the project. The mentors are truly sincere in caring for their mentees, obtaining their trust and forging life-long relationships. (para.15)
Our takeaways
As our project also involves mentoring and training youth at risks, we are able to understand how these qualities can attribute to a better socio-emotional well-being of youths at risks. We will learn from “Beautiful People” and strive to demonstrate these qualities before, during and after the mentorship to create a more sustainable impact for our mentees.
